Mimpi adalah salah satu jalan yang digunakan Allah l untuk menyampaikan suatu kabar, peringatan atau perintah kepada manusia. Hal ini diisyaratkan oleh Allah l di banyak ayat dalam Al-Qur’an, misalnya pada kisah penyembelihan salah seorang dari anaknya.
Maka tatkala anak itu sampai (pada umur sanggup) berusaha bersama-sama Ibrahim, Ibrahim berkata: “Hai anakku sesungguhnya aku melihat dalam mimpi bahwa aku menyembelihmu. Maka fikirkanlah apa pendapatmu!” Ia menjawab: “Hai bapakku, kerjakanlah apa yang diperintahkan kepadamu; in syaa-a Allah kamu akan mendapatiku termasuk orang-orang yang sabar.” QS. As-Shaffat: 102
Di ayat lain kita juga dapat menemukan tentang sejarah Nabi Yusuf, bahwa raja Mesir mendapat mimpi yang benar sebagai peringatan dan rahmat dari Allah l sebelum kedatangan masa kering yang dahsyat. Semua ini tidak lain, memberikan pula pengetahuan bagi kita seluruhnya, bahwa posisi mimpi dalam kehidupan beragama seorang muslim adalah krusial. Sayangnya, walaupun sedemikian penting, saat ini mimpi sering hanya dianggap sebagai bunga tidur oleh kebanyakan masyarakat modern. Padahal, dari kutipan sebuah hadits riwayat Bukhari 1297, dari Samrah bin Jundab ia berkata bahwa; “Sudah menjadi kebiasaan Nabi n bila selesai melaksanakan suatu shalat, Beliau menghadapkan wajahnya kepada kami lalu berkata: “Siapa di antara kalian yang tadi malam bermimpi? …” Dikutip pula dari HR. bukhari 6511, dari Ibnu Umar mengatakan, aku anak muda lajang di masa Nabi n, dan aku tidur di masjid. Dahulu ada satu kebiasaan, siapa yang bermimpi, maka ia menceritakan mimpinya kepada Nabi …” Inilah mengapa posisi mimpi pada hakikatnya merupakan sesuatu yang tidak bisa dipandang dengan sebelah mata.
Posisi mimpi bahkan menjadi lebih penting bagi umat Islam akhir zaman.
